Eczema – Soothing A Mother’s Heartbreak

(An abridged version of this article appeared in the Star Special, Parenting, pg 10 on July 23, 2009 under the title “Combating Eczema Naturally with Olive Juice”)

We received this letter from Michelle, sharing a very personal story…

“My four year old son has very serious eczema around his neck area. I first noticed it when he was about six months old. Initially, I discounted it as just “one of those things” (like nappy rash) that all babies would have. He grew out of his nappy rash by the time we celebrated his first birthday.

At about the same time, the rashes on his neck became more serious. I applied prescription steroid cream on him to stop it from spreading and to lessen the itchiness.  This was a repeated cycle for the last three years. After each round of relief, it is followed by another episode of more nasty flare. At one point, almost 80% of the visible neck area of my son had wet, itchy and painful flaring rash.

The most heartbreaking thing I had to endure was my husband’s decision to tie up my boy’s hands at night to stop him from scratching himself.  There is no word to describe the agony of this helpless mother and powerless wife.

I am glad those days are now over. A family friend who happened to be a doctor recommended us to try OLIVENOL, an organic olive juice extract. I am grateful he did.

The improvements were visible after the first week. His rashes became less red and were no longer oozing wet.  After two months, there were still some eczema patch on his neck but he is no longer troubled by the itch.  When the scratching stopped, the healing process accelerated.

I am glad we found a solution that worked for my son. Thank you.”

Michelle, 30, Kulai.

Michelle’s story although often untold, is an experience that is not unique. If you ask any parent group with young children, the majority of them will tell you their children suffer from ezcema, “skin allergy” or some symptoms of dermatitis. Dermatitis is the English word that means inflammation of the skin, and it comes from Greek words which refer to something that is boiling over. These inflammations in most instances show up as small red bumps or fluid filled blisters on the skin, and accounts for up to 20 percent of all visits to the dermatologist.

Inflammation is the cause of the itching that is associated with eczema. It is caused when a person with a susceptible immune system is exposed to irritants that set it off. These irritants are widespread and numerous and are sometimes not that easily defined or “found out” to be a source of the problem.

The way inflammation works is that as it increases, it promotes more and more itching. If the itch is scratched, the inflammation becomes even more progressively worse, and the itch scratch cycle of eczema is set in motion until it is interrupted.

Just like Michelle, parents go through sleepless nights and heartbreaking days when they are unable to help their eczema stricken child.

The popular treatment that doctors prescribe to stop inflammation and interrupt the itch scratch cycle is steroid creams that are applied directly to the skin’s surface. These creams do stop the itch, but not without the threat of potential side effects.

The main effect being a hateful, vengeance filled return of a nastier flare up which requires stronger medicine to heal it than the first one did. These conventional medicines only treat the symptoms of eczema. They do not address the fundamental cause. This only provides temporary relief.

In addition, most traditional medications like hydrocortisone cream contain toxins that build up in the body, and cannot be used long term.

If you were to take the time to look, you will find an abundance of natural eczema treatments that can be used to stop inflammation without the dangers of side effects. This is the route that many people like Michelle are taking and using to find relief for their children.

One of the most important natural ingredients for eczema comes from the olive fruit. Olive is effective against numerous viruses, bacteria and fungi. It has been well known for thousands of years to have positive effects to the skin.

Olives contain polyphenols that are potent anti-oxidants and have been found able to modulate our body’s immune system and reduce excessive inflammatory flares. Children with well modulated immune system are less likely to suffer from eczema in the future. They are able to recover faster from illness and fight off illnesses and get sick less often.

The healing relationship between olive polyphenols and eczema is well known in the medical community. What is lesser known to the general public is that amongst all the olive polyphenols, hydroxytyrosol (HT) is the key molecule responsible to deliver these therapeutic effects.

OLIVENOL livin’ is produced from olive juice extract. Olive juice extract contains 98% of the phenols from in olives. OLIVENOL livin’ BEGIN is a patented formulation of polyphenols containing hydroxytyrosol that may assist in the healing process of skin disorders that are caused by imbalanced immune system. It helps to boost the immunity in the body due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

A few months ago, we received another letter from Noly, a practicing pharmacist in Johor, sharing a similar story as Michelle.  You can read Noly’s letter HERE.  If you know of anyone going through the same experience as Noly and Michelle, you are doing them great service if you email this article or share it with them on FACEBOOK.

OLIVENOL livin’ is prescribed as adjunctive and adjuvant therapy by doctors in hospitals, specialist centres and clinics. You can also purchase it from retail chain pharmacies and community pharmacies nationwide.

My eldest had started eczema when she was 3 months old. We went through yearly checkups and food test until she was 6 years old, thank God she has grown out of Food allergies including Milk, Peanuts and Eggs. I use Cetaphil soap, mild detergent – SA8 from Amway and keep the skin moisturized with Vaseline petroleum jelly. Do not let your child skin dry and do not use any with fragrance.

My 4-year-old son also sufferred from eczema since 6 months old and it went worse when he ate peanuts, egg yolk and seafood. Paediatrician asked me only bath him once a day, use Aqua cream as daily body lotion, and apply Elomet cream when there is any breakouts. But later on I realized that the cream is steriod and filled with parabens. Until recently I switched all his toiletries including body wash, shampoo and lotion to organic brands which are has NO PARABENS, NO SLS (foam agent), NO ALCOHOL, & NO FRAGRANCE. His skin is now always moistured and smooth. The best thing is he can eat peanuts and eggs again!
