Dr Allan KC Yee, 1951 to 2009: A Champion for Psoriasis Sufferers

Psoriasis sufferers in Malaysia lost a good friend. Dermatologist Dr Allan Yee Kim Chye, suddenly collapsed of a heart attack on Sept 16, 2009.

Allan will be missed by many. His contribution to Psoriasis community in Malaysia is significant. He was instrumental in the set up of the Psoriasis Association of Malaysia, the only organised psoriasis support group, and served as it’s advisor.

Unlike other doctors, Allan refused to give up on finding a solution for this disease. Exploring beyond the knowledge and limitations of conventional medicine, he kept an open mind to adopt phyto nutrients as adjuvant therapy. He single handedly taught us more about P than we could ever learn from books or experience.

Allan has a genuine compassion and was hopeful that the positive results he saw in the OLIVENOL livin’ trial he conducted could form the scientific basis for a solution to a large community of sufferers.

Our sense of loss is compounded. Prof Numano who first discovered the positive effects of Olivenol on psoriasis passed away before he could publish his findings. And now Dr Allan Yee having completed a similar trial in Malaysia with very positive results has passed away before he could publish his findings.

Coupled with healthier diet habits, I have seen much improvement since then and am still taking olivenol daily today. I started seeing him March this year, and honestly he was the best derm I’ve seen thus far coz he truly cared to understand my medical needs coz he understood the psychological and emotional impact of this skin condition and gave me many useful medical advice tailored to my lifestyle. I’m gonna miss him.

Is there a Cure for Psoriasis?

This is Article FIVE in our series on “The Heartbreak of Psoriasis”.

It may be strange for a company marketing OLIVENOL livin’ – a product aimed at psoriasis sufferers – to say this. Unfortunately, there is NO psoriasis cure but there are psoriasis treatments. It is that simple.

Anybody claiming to have a psoriasis cure is misleading and is not able to substantiate with medical evidence. Nothing you do causes psoriasis, it is also that simple.

A psoriasis diet will not magically cure psoriasis, neither will steroids or powerful vitamin derivative type drugs that alter your immune system.

In this article, we offer an unequivocal answer to this single question as we receive many hundreds of emails on our website each month asking us for a psoriasis cure.

These emails are sent by those who have read encouraging reports on the well publicised Tokyo Vascular Institute trial on chronic psoriasis patients conducted by the late Prof Fujio Numano. All psoriasis patients who were on that trial achieved remarkable improvement in their conditions after undergoing OLIVENOL livin’ therapy for twelve months.

Although it may be commercially advantageous to claim credit and associate the results of the Numano study to all psoriasis cases, it would be dishonest and ethically wrong.

The truth is, not every psoriasis patient will benefit from OLIVENOL livin’ taken as adjuvant or adjunctive therapy.

Let us share with you what we DO know and what else we still need to discover.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune problem, a dysfunction of the body’s metabolism, similar to that which occurs in arthritis (psoriasis is often associated with arthritis).

Any treatment, medical or alternative, for psoriasis must first address the imbalance that has occurred in the immune system before lasting benefits can occur.

Many of the drug therapies available carry long lists of scary side effects such as liver or kidney damage, elevation of blood pressure, interactions with other medications, burning or thinning the skin organ, and even cancer.

On the other hand, alternative therapies may be less toxic but their effectiveness is questionable and varies individually. Some sufferers have come to the conclusion that not treating at all is the best option.

There is no cure for psoriasis. The best that a sufferer can realistically hope for is long term remission, where the symptoms seems to fade away. The disease does not have any medically recognised cure.

This does not mean though that there is no hope of a cure in the future.

Psoriasis is frequently referred to as a “T-cell mediated disease.” T cells are a type of immune system cell (white blood cell) that are proven to be very important in the internal process of psoriasis.

If T cells are not activated, the immune response and the cycle of psoriasis never get started. If the T cell becomes activated, an immune response is initiated that leads to the development of skin lesions.

One part of this response includes the release of cytokines. Cytokines are proteins that the immune system uses to communicate messages. In psoriasis, cytokines tell skin cells to reproduce and mature at an accelerated rate. They also set off other reactions, including inflammation, the activation of additional T cells, the recruiting of T cells into the skin and the release or “cascade” of more cytokines.

Cracking the Cytokines Codes on Psoriasis

These T cells are also responsible for a range of skin disorder such as eczema, allergic dermatitis and even certain form of chronic acne.

With the introduction of the new Biologic forms of treatment it is hoped that longer term viable relief can be given to sufferers everywhere. There is optimism in this direction because biologics treatment address the immune system response at the cellular level.

In earlier articles, we highlighted recent scientific discovery that hydroxytyrosol (HT), a natural olive polyphenol, that forms the active ingredient of OLIVENOL livin’ exhibits biologic response modifying function similar to this new class of biologic treatment. (Zhang X, Cao J, Zhong L. Naunyn Schmiedebergs Arch Pharmacol. 2009 Jun;379(6):581-6).

This helps explain the positive results in the series of “untold stories” we shared previously on effective relief for arthritic pain (Josie Lim, Julie Ng, KC Chan), eczema (Michelle Shiew), allergic dermatitis (Lisa Lee) and psoriasis (KH Ng, Calvin Lam).

Over the past 18 months, since the introduction of OLIVENOL livin’ in Malaysia at Prince Court Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, a large amount of data have been collected in an effort to better understand the effectiveness of the product on psoriasis.

Based on the data compiled, a large majority of psoriasis sufferers achieve positive results with OLIVENOL livin therapy. However there is still a significant minority who do not respond in treatment. No one knows why.

Therefore, despite these anecdotal evidence on the clinical results of OLIVENOL livin’, there is still a need for more conclusive data.

A leading private hospital in Kuala Lumpur conducted an open label trial on psoriasis. The results will be published later this year.

The National Skin Centre (NSC) of Singapore will conduct a controlled trial on 100 psoriasis patients. This trial will commence as soon as the NSC’s ethics committee approves the trial protocol.

At the same time, Triniaire Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian distributor of OLIVENOL livin’ has embarked on an ambitious programme to publicly document the effectiveness OLIVENOL livin’ on volunteer psoriasis sufferers.

Participants in this programme are selected and put on a three months therapy on OLIVENOL livin’. Each participant is required to maintain an online journal of their progress.

By recording and archiving these cases openly, the company hopes to gain further knowledge on the product’s efficacy. If it works, this knowledge is useful. It it does not, or only works under certain limited conditions, at least the boundaries are identified.

Do you know anyone with severe psoriasis?

Since we launched OLIVENOL livin’ in Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC), Kuala Lumpur back in April 2008, we have found many Malaysians getting effective results on a range of autoimmune conditions. Our data on psoriasis is encouraging with many users writing back to convey their positive results. At the same time, we have some who did not see any results.

Scalp Psoriasis

There is an ongoing trial in a major private hospital in KL – testing the effectiveness of OLIVENOL livin on psoriatic patients with affected body area in excess of 5%. The results will be published by the investigator later this year.

In the interest to build our knowledge on the effect of OLIVENOL livin’ on psoriasis, we are seeking a group of psoriasis patients who are willing to join us on a 3 months programme to trial the effect of OLIVENOL livin’ in your daily life.

We are designing this as a public programme, using the internet as the tool of recording results and communicating experience to interest group.

We are therefore keen to recruit upto 10 psoriasis patients interested to trial OLIVENOL livin under this programme. You will have to be a diagnosed patient with severe lesions/plaques on your body. You need to have some knowledge of internet technology such as blogging, email etc. (We can provide guidance). Last but not least, you must be willing to share your 90-day journey publicly.

[UPDATE] Sharing can be done anonymously using a pseudonym or if you comfortable to be identified, you are free to do so. The ultimate choice on privacy of identity is left entirely to the participant.

In exchange, we will provide you supply for OLIVENOL livin’ at no charge.

We are interested to determine the true extent of OLIVENOL livin’s efficacy on psoriasis. Your participation in this project will help us and other patients determine with more accuracy.

The Heartbreak of Psoriasis – Does Nature Have An Answer?

The Heartbreak of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is probably one of the longest known illnesses of humans and simultaneously one of the most misunderstood. It is a chronic, non-contagious autoimmune disease which affects the skin and joints. It commonly causes red scaly patches to appear on the skin. The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, called psoriatic plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production.

Psoriasis is a lifelong condition. There is currently no cure but various treatments can help to control the symptoms. Many of the most effective agents used to treat severe psoriasis carry an increased risk of significant morbidity including skin cancers, lymphoma and liver disease.

However, the majority of people’s experience of psoriasis is that of minor localized patches, particularly on the elbows and knees, which can be treated with topical medication. Psoriasis can get worse over time but it is not possible to predict who will go on to develop extensive psoriasis or those in whom the disease may appear to vanish. Individuals will often experience flares and remissions throughout their lives. Controlling the signs and symptoms typically requires lifelong therapy.

The cause of psoriasis is not fully understood. There are two main hypotheses. The first considers psoriasis as primarily a disorder of excessive growth and reproduction of skin cells. The problem is simply seen as a fault of the epidermis and its keratinocytes (skin stem cells).

The second hypothesis sees the disease as being an immune-mediated disorder in which the excessive reproduction of skin cells is secondary to factors produced by the immune system. T cells (which normally help protect the body against infection) become active, migrate to the dermis and trigger the release of cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha TNF-a, in particular) which cause inflammation and the rapid production of skin cells. It is not known what initiates the activation of the T cells.

New drugs approved to treat psoriasis target the activity of T lymphocytes and cytokines responsible for the inflammatory nature of psoriasis. These biologic drugs are currently under going clinical trial and are similar in strategy to treat psoriasis by inhibiting the TNF cascade.

Although not widely known, olive polyphenols, or more specifically hydroxytyrosol (HT) have been found to exhibit biologic response modifying activities similar to this class of new drugs. Several studies in different parts of the world have shown HT is able to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines, iNOS, and COX-2 expression in human monocytic cells. Scientist believe they have found a non-toxic agent for the control of pro-inflammatory genes.

If these findings are confirmed in further research, we may have found in the olives, natures answer to psoriasis.

In the past year, a small group of psoriasis sufferers in Malaysia have found an olive phenol extract, rich in hydroxytyrosol (HT) to have helped them cope with their condition. Below is a story from one of them.

“My Untold Story” – In a series of untold stories, we share letters from psoriasis sufferers who found new therapies to sooth their heartbreak.

I was 25 years old when I was afflicted with psoriasis. It started on my scalp, then elbow and knees. Though it wasn’t very painful, the itchiness in those scabbed areas caused great discomfort. I didn’t dare scratch too much in order not to aggravate the troubled spots, but it was very distracting. My normal routine in life was affected, and there were times when I just didn’t feel like socialising.

I went to several dermatologist, and the only help they could give me was ointments and more ointments, which didn’t really help. Some of them did partially take away the symptoms for a short time but the itchiness will come back again.

I came across OLIVENOL livin’ at my neighbourhood pharmacy. The pharmacist recommended this product and told me that the product had shown encouraging results in a small trial on psoriasis patient in Japan. She did not present the product to me as a “proven cure”, which in a way made me more willing to try it.

I saw the pictures and did a bit of research to verify that there was indeed such a trial. I concluded that despite it not being a controlled trial and the patient group was rather small, the results looked credible enough.

As I was already desperate and there was nothing in the market that has helped me, I decided to give the product try.

I was determined I would be persistent in taking Olivenol livin. I decided I would give myself a year and replicate the daily dosage of the Japanese patient group who took the product for 12 months.

After 6 months of consuming (which is short compared to my 15 years of suffering!), I noticed a remarkable improvement in my condition. The scabs on my scalp has reduced by almost 70%! My arthritis pain caused by psoriasis has also reduced drastically.

I have consumed it for a year. There is no reason for me to stop. The thoughts and memory of the torturous itch encourage me to stay on course. OLIVENOL livin’ is the first product that has given a real solution to my condition.

A large private hospital in Kuala Lumpur is currently conducting a trial on the effectiveness of oral polyphenol hydroxytyrosol on the management of severe psoriasis. In addition to measuring the changes in the psoriasis area severity index (PASI), the trial will also measure biochemical indicators of chronic inflammation. Results from this trial is expected to be published later this year.

Hydroxytyrosol From Olives Is Found to Promote Cartilage Repair and Regeneration

…it has been found that hydroxytyrosol is effective in inducing or enhancing the proliferation of chondrocytes, stimulating the proliferation of cartilage cells and increasing their production of extracellular matrix components which as a consequence promotes cartilage repair and regeneration. Thus, hydroxytyrosol is useful for maintaining cartilage health, inducing or enhancing cartilage repair or cartilage regeneration as well as for treating cartilage lesions in joints of an animal including humans in particular in people with an active life style, sports people and obese subjects.

On dosage and combination therapy, the paper recommends:

A composition comprising on a daily dosage basis:

approximately 800 – 1200 mg glucosamine, preferably 1000mg,

approximately 600-1000 mg chondroitin sulfate, preferably 800mg,

approximately 200-600 mg of PUFA’s, in particular EPA and DHA, preferably 400 mg,

approximately 5 to 20 mg of Hydroxytyrosol, preferably 10 mg and

15-50 IU vitamin E, preferably 30 IU.

This is encouraging news to the large population of arthritis sufferers who are getting unsatisfactory results from glucosamine-chondroitin therapy (GCT). It is now shown that adding a daily dose of hydroxytyrosol to your current regime of GCT may make a significant difference to your condition.
