Psoriasis, Eczema and Allergy Dermatitis – What do they have in common?
Apart from the obvious commonality that psoriasis, eczema, and allergy dermatitis are diseases that affect the human skin, we will discuss what other commonalities, if any, exist between them.
In our ongoing series of My Untold Stories – The Heartbreak of Psoriasis, we shared with you stories about Mr KH Ng a psoriasis sufferer and Michelle Shiew, a mother of a child with chronic eczema. In both stories, we learn how their respective pain, anguish and heartbreak were replaced by joy and relieve when they found a natural solution for their skin ailment.
In this article, we share a new story by Lisa Lee who made an entry in OLIVENOL livin’ Facebook Fan Page on July 12, 2009:
My mom has very bad skin allergy that causes her face to erupt with horrible red swells. It itches and oozes some sort of liquid. She can’t cook because of the smoke and oil. She can’t go under the sun because of the heat and can’t eat countless types of food.
Doctors prescribed anti-histamine to control her condition, but we all know that’s not the cure.
I started my mum on OLIVENOL livin’ since May (two months ago). She’s so much better now”.

Another obvious commonality in Lisa, Michelle and Mr Ng’s stories is their discovery that OLIVENOL livin’ helped sooth their heartache caused by skin allergy, eczema and psoriasis, respectively.
Yale researchers have found that natural killer T cells (NKT), a combination of T lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells, are involved in the formation of skin allergies such as poison ivy and contact sensitivity to chemicals and metals like nickel in jewelry. (Reference: Journal of Experimental Medicine, Vol. 198, No. 12, Dec. 15, 2003)
Allergies are abnormal or hypersensitive responses of the immune system to relatively harmless environmental antigens. Some people are genetically predisposed to hypersensitivity. When they are exposed to skin allergens like poison ivy, the initial exposure leads to a state of hypersensitivity; the body produces an exaggerated reaction the next time skin comes into contact with the allergen.
The resulting skin inflammation and severe itch such as those described by Lisa, are caused by over-reaction of effector T cells, white blood cells that migrate to the skin when re-exposed to an allergen.
Conventional therapy such as steroid cream only controls plaques and lesions that are the results of inflammation but it does not stop the inflammation from triggering.
Anti-histamine on the other hand, only controls itching sensation and discomfort which are the outcome of an underlying inflammation that the immune system fails to regulate.
Clearly, a better solution is required. The three stories in our series so far suggest that perhaps a better solution already exists.
In all three cases of psoriasis, eczema and allergy dermatitis, T cells (which normally help protect the body against infection) become active, migrate to the dermis and trigger the release of cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha TNF-a, in particular) which cause inflammation and the rapid production of skin cells. T cells are put into action by mistake. They become so active that they set off other immune responses.
Recent research on hydroxytyrosol (HT) an olive polyphenol have found it to exhibit biologic response modifying activities that modulates the effect of hyperactivated T cells.
These studies in different parts of the world have shown HT is able to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines, iNOS, and COX-2 expression in human monocytic cells. Scientist believe they have found a non-toxic agent for the control of pro-inflammatory genes.
If these findings are confirmed in further research, it is possible that Ng’s, Michelle’s and Lisa’s experiences are not mere anecdotal coincidence.
Psoriasis, eczema and allergy dermatitis sufferers may also have a scientifically supported common solution to their conditions in OLIVENOL livin’.
Do you know anyone with severe psoriasis?
Since we launched OLIVENOL livin’ in Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC), Kuala Lumpur back in April 2008, we have found many Malaysians getting effective results on a range of autoimmune conditions. Our data on psoriasis is encouraging with many users writing back to convey their positive results. At the same time, we have some who did not see any results.
If you Google “olivenol + psoriasis”, you will find these results in the public domain. (click HERE)

Scalp Psoriasis
There is an ongoing trial in a major private hospital in KL – testing the effectiveness of OLIVENOL livin on psoriatic patients with affected body area in excess of 5%. The results will be published by the investigator later this year.

The Healing Power of Olives – Keajaiban Perubatan Buah Zaitun
We just concluded a search and review of existing written materials in “bahasa” that examine the healing power of olives. Invariably, these contents were “hash and rehash” of older English materials on “olive oil” and scriptural references based on the Quran and the Hadith.
Here are 3 of the better articles we found:
Whilst there were some reference to olive “polyphenol” being the unique molecules responsible for the “miraculous” healing properties, non of these articles identified “hydroxytyrosol” – the most potent molecule amongst all the polyphenols.
This is an unfortunate omission because, in the most recent 10 years, medical and scientific literature on olives had predominantly focussed on the study of hydroxytyrosol (HT). In our efforts to disseminate results of these new studies, we have and will continue to publish English articles summarizing the key findings in simple terms that is understandable by the general public.
We received many enquiries from a new segment of consumers who requested materials on this website to be made available in “bahasa”. This is a request we are happy to work on. Perhaps a dedicated language site ? Our readers and Facebook FANs whose language preference is bahasa deserve the same access to information as the rest.
We want everyone to appreciate that the Holy Scriptures’ (Islam, Christianity, Judaism and even Greek Mythology!!) references to the healing powers of olives is solidly substantiated by modern science and medical research.
Treating Arthritis: OTC Supplements vs Prescription Medications
The Agony of Arthritis: OTC Supplements vs Prescription Medications
A survey conducted by Caravan Opinion Research among Orthopaedic Surgeons in the US shows they view “over-the-counter” (OTC) supplements as an effective alternative to prescription medications.
These specialists say an over-the-counter (OTC) treatment can be an effective alternative to prescription medication. According to new survey results unveiled of more than 250 orthopedic surgeons, 70 percent of those surveyed say they recommend OTCs most often as a first line treatment option to their patients with minor arthritis pain.
The survey was conducted to measure how recent news about the safety of pain relievers has affected the way orthopedic surgeons recommend medications for minor arthritis pain.
Orthopedic surgeons are specialists in the treatment of bone and joint disorders, including arthritis. The survey is a collaborative effort by colleagues at Florida Hospital, David D. Dore, M.D., Medical Director of The Joint Replacement Center at Celebration Health and James Rippe, M.D. of the hospital’s Rippe Lifestyle Institute.
“Given all the recent negative news, I think physicians are being more cautious about using prescription pain relievers that may increase their patients’ risk for serious health issues,” said Dr. Dore. Almost all (90 percent) specialists surveyed report that they have decreased their use of COX-2 prescription medications and increased their use of OTCs.
Among this group, 91 percent named easy dosing with fewer pills as a top reason they believe Aleve to be the most effective OTC pain medication while 81 percent named long-lasting relief as a top reason.
“I always tell my patients to start with an OTC medication and the results of the survey show that most orthopedic surgeons seem to agree,” said Dr. Rippe. “Furthermore, I think you’d find similar results among other specialists who treat people with arthritis. No matter what their specialty, doctors are looking for the same thing when recommending pain medication — efficacy and safety. Over-the-counter pain medications offer both.”
Significant Survey Findings
* Nearly all – 82 percent – of orthopaedic surgeons polled report that recent news about pain relievers has had an effect on the way they recommend pain medication for minor arthritis pain
* Based on experience, 97 percent of orthopaedic surgeons surveyed believe OTCs can be an effective alternative to prescription medication to treat minor arthritis pain
The Situation in Malaysia
Recent development shows that the situation in Malaysia is moving in the same direction. Orthopaedic Surgeons and Rheumatologist have started to recommend OTCs supplementation as a first line alternative treatment for the same reasons.
OLIVENOL livin’, a patented extract from olive juice has established itself as one of the top OTC product used in the treatment of arthritis in several private hospitals in Malaysia. OLIVENOL is one of the few natural OTC supplement with strong clinical findings demonstrating its efficacy in relieving arthritic pain and increasing mobility of affected joints.
In 2005, the Arizona State University conducted a clinical trial to evaluate the effects of OLIVENOL™ on 100 patients aged from 55 to 75 years, suffering from Osteoarthritis (OA) & Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). The trial employed a double blind placebo protocol where patients we not aware of what they were consuming.
The summary findings showed OLIVENOL™ made significant improvement in relieving pain, reducing inflammation and improving movement, as reported by both patient and physician. Click to download the full published report from >> HERE <<
Discuss With Your Doctor
The next time you consult your orthopaedic surgeon or rheumatologist, ask him about OLIVENOL as alternative treatment to your conditions. There is a growing group of medical specialists in Malaysia who are using OTC supplementation such as OLIVENOL™ livin’ as treatment for their arthritis patients. Both patients and doctors are happy with the results on this decision.
We are telling these untold stories to the public in conjunction with a 3-month National Arthritis Focus Campaign. If you have any questions on arthritis or the use of OLIVENOL as treatment for arthritis, direct them to us. Arthritis sufferers need to know there is a better alternative treatment available to them.
