My hubby’s psoriasis on the face started with a few small patches when he took up his first job and worked overtime almost everyday. Workload, stress and improper meals and sleeping time has contributed to his condition getting serious. When he first noticed those patches, he treated them as skin sensitive and started to seek medical advise from the skin specialist but none actually helped and none of them ever tell him that it’s psoriasis.

Without knowing exactly his problem, he continue visiting one specialist to another and continue taking those oral medication and applying crèmes. To an extend he even had injections on the patches to reduce the redness. This continue for a few years and finally a doctor told him about psoriasis which lead to our research for further information. We found out that those prescribed medications and crèmes contains steroid which are harmful to the liver.

From then onwards, we start to look for alternatives and steroid free natural healings. He tried TCM (traditional Chinese medication) and Ayurvedic but none actually help to improve his condition. We have no other choice but have to seek medical advise from practicing skin specialist and was then recommended to Dr Allan Yee. My Mummy was an outdoor, active person before I was born. Her life turned around and she became a haggard looking person with black eyes right after due to sleepless nights for many months. She used to watch me sleeping and tears will drop as my skin was badly affected by eczema since I was 2 months old. I didn’t sleep well too and keep waking up my Mummy as I was itchy all the time.

When my Mummy takes me out, people will gape as I looked like I had a disease or I was being abused. My face, arms, legs and body were all red and oozing with water and bloody coz I scratched it hard. Mummy used to boast that I was the smartest baby as I learnt to scratch at a very young age of 2 months. My Mummy and Daddy tried all sorts of methods to help me and spent all the money that they would’ve kept to send me to an international school but to no avail.

But the best thing is that my Mummy got her life back. She can now go back to kickboxing classes although I wouldn’t let her go to all other outdoor activities without me . Michelle’s story although often untold, is an experience that is not unique. If you ask any parent group with young children, the majority of them will tell you their children suffer from ezcema, “skin allergy” or some symptoms of dermatitis. Dermatitis is the English word that means inflammation of the skin, and it comes from Greek words which refer to something that is boiling over. These inflammations in most instances show up as small red bumps or fluid filled blisters on the skin, and accounts for up to 20 percent of all visits to the dermatologist.

Inflammation is the cause of the itching that is associated with eczema. It is caused when a person with a susceptible immune system is exposed to irritants that set it off. These irritants are widespread and numerous and are sometimes not that easily defined or “found out” to be a source of the problem.

The way inflammation works is that as it increases, it promotes more and more itching. If the itch is scratched, the inflammation becomes even more progressively worse, and the itch scratch cycle of eczema is set in motion until it is interrupted.

Just like Michelle, parents go through sleepless nights and heartbreaking days when they are unable to help their eczema stricken child.

The popular treatment that doctors prescribe to stop inflammation and interrupt the itch scratch cycle is steroid creams that are applied directly to the skin’s surface. These creams do stop the itch, but not without the threat of potential side effects.

Scalp Psoriasis

There is an ongoing trial in a major private hospital in KL – testing the effectiveness of OLIVENOL livin on psoriatic patients with affected body area in excess of 5%.  The results will be published by the investigator later this year.

The Heartbreak of Psoriasis

Psoriasis is probably one of the longest known illnesses of humans and simultaneously one of the most misunderstood. It is a chronic, non-contagious autoimmune disease which affects the skin and joints. It commonly causes red scaly patches to appear on the skin. The scaly patches caused by psoriasis, called psoriatic plaques, are areas of inflammation and excessive skin production.

Psoriasis is a lifelong condition. There is currently no cure but various treatments can help to control the symptoms. Many of the most effective agents used to treat severe psoriasis carry an increased risk of significant morbidity including skin cancers, lymphoma and liver disease.

However, the majority of people’s experience of psoriasis is that of minor localized patches, particularly on the elbows and knees, which can be treated with topical medication. Psoriasis can get worse over time but it is not possible to predict who will go on to develop extensive psoriasis or those in whom the disease may appear to vanish. Individuals will often experience flares and remissions throughout their lives. Controlling the signs and symptoms typically requires lifelong therapy.

The cause of psoriasis is not fully understood. There are two main hypotheses. The first considers psoriasis as primarily a disorder of excessive growth and reproduction of skin cells. The problem is simply seen as a fault of the epidermis and its keratinocytes (skin stem cells).

The second hypothesis sees the disease as being an immune-mediated disorder in which the excessive reproduction of skin cells is secondary to factors produced by the immune system. T cells (which normally help protect the body against infection) become active, migrate to the dermis and trigger the release of cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha TNF-a, in particular) which cause inflammation and the rapid production of skin cells. It is not known what initiates the activation of the T cells.

New drugs approved to treat psoriasis target the activity of T lymphocytes and cytokines responsible for the inflammatory nature of psoriasis. These biologic drugs are currently under going clinical trial and are similar in strategy to treat psoriasis by inhibiting the TNF cascade.

Although not widely known, olive polyphenols, or more specifically hydroxytyrosol (HT) have been found to exhibit biologic response modifying activities similar to this class of new drugs. Several studies in different parts of the world have shown HT is able to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines, iNOS, and COX-2 expression in human monocytic cells. Scientist believe they have found a non-toxic agent for the control of pro-inflammatory genes.

If these findings are confirmed in further research, we may have found in the olives, natures answer to psoriasis.

In the past year, a small group of psoriasis sufferers in Malaysia have found an olive phenol extract, rich in hydroxytyrosol (HT) to have helped them cope with their condition. Below is a story from one of them.

“My Untold Story” – In a series of untold stories, we share letters from psoriasis sufferers who found new therapies to sooth their heartbreak.

I was 25 years old when I was afflicted with psoriasis. It started on my scalp, then elbow and knees. Though it wasn’t very painful, the itchiness in those scabbed areas caused great discomfort. I didn’t dare scratch too much in order not to aggravate the troubled spots, but it was very distracting. My normal routine in life was affected, and there were times when I just didn’t feel like socialising.

I went to several dermatologist, and the only help they could give me was ointments and more ointments, which didn’t really help. Some of them did partially take away the symptoms for a short time but the itchiness will come back again.
